The Roll!

This is my last AP for my STEAM class called Light, Sound, and Time. In our last unit, we have been focusing on time and how there are different devices made to tell time. For this AP, we had to design a new version of a clock and add something to it so that it is an original. At first, I felt like this was going to be hard because I didn't know what exactly to add to a clock. My design is based off of a couple different devices that are already made that people use on a daily basis. We had to make a video explaining what our device is and how it functions. We looked at different types of clocks for this unit as well. Some examples that we looked at were sundials, candle clocks, incense clocks, hourglasses, atomic clocks, and water clocks. We learned a lot about latitude and longitude and how these two can help you find out the time without a clock available. Down below you will see the device that I designed and I hope that you find my device interesting!

KRM, Measurements (2019)
Since we had to add math to this AP, I decided to find the volume of the roll. The roll is a cylinder with two semi spheres on the ends. So, I found the volume of the cylinder which is v= π r^2 h. The radius of the cylinder is 6 inches and the height of the cylinder is 4 inches. Once I plugged in the numbers I got 452.38 in^3 as the of the cylinder.

Since there are two semi spheres I had to add the volume of the cylinder plus the volume of two semi spheres. The equation for finding the volume of a semi sphere is v= (2/3) π r^3. The radius of the semi sphere was 3. So once you plugged in the radius for the semi sphere, v= (2/3) π r^3= 56.54 in^3. Since there are two semi sphere, I added another 56.54 so that I could get the number that I need to add to the volume of cylinder so that I can get the volume of the entire device. The volume for the entire device is 452.38+113.08= 565.56 in^3.

KRM, Back of  Device (2019)
This is an image of the back of the device that I designed. As you can see, there are five holes for the light to enter through so that the clack can charge. There are two rectangular shaped holes on the back for air to flow out of the device so that the clock doesn't over heat and blow up. There is also an auxiliary cord hole in the back so that you have another way to connect your phone to this device.

KRM,  Extra Light (2019)
If you don't have sunlight that enters through your windows then there is a light that comes with this device that you pop on the top of the device and it charges The Roll the same way natural sunlight would charge it. My device measures time by using light because light is the only way this device will be able to operate. This also allows the device to be portable, which is helpful because you might want to take your music with you where ever you're going.

KRM, The Roll (2019)

The Roll is better than an atomic clock, beats pill speaker, and Alexa because you have everything in one. The Roll can talk to you just like Alexa. If you ask for anything, the roll will tell you. Just says "Yo Roll", and you will find out anything that you want to know. Alexa can not connect to your phone ad she is not a portable device, Alexa has to be plugged in and The Roll doesn't. You can also call and message people off of this device. There is bluetooth so you can connect to this device and play your favorite songs. There is a setting buttons and you can change the voice of The Roll, the date, the time, and you can choose if you want for the weather to show up on the screen or not. Yes, it is a touch screen clock which makes this device even cooler. I wanted to design this device because I love listening to music but I am also a busy person. So if I am doing homework or cleaning u around the house, I would want for The Roll to be around because I am going to need the time, going to want to play music, and I am going to want to hear my notifications as well. This is also helpful because if your phone is not near you The Roll will tell you if someone is calling you or texting you and you can talk to them and text them from off of this great device.

In conclusion, I really enjoyed Light, Sound, and Time, and I feel like I have learned a lot about things that I never really think about. I hope that you were able to learn something from my AP and I can't wait to see what Adam has for the junior class next tern. Thank you!
